Can Mel Reid Win again?
Melissa Reid, Last week’s Turkish Airlines Ladies Open winner will go into the week with renewed confidence, on a course where she finished equal third last year behind Jade Schaeffer and Paula Marti, just one shot shy of entering the playoff.
The championship, which gets underway on Thursday, is taking place at Golfpark Gut sern for the third year running and the course is in magnificent condition despite the heavy storms in the area over the past seven days, when four inches of rain fell, drenching the course.
In stark contrast to Turkey, which was a tight, tree lined layout, the 5844-metre par 72 course is much wider and players can let rip with the driver.
This year, prize money is up 10 per cent on 2009 to 330,000 Euros and the winner will take home a 49,500 Euros first prize as well as an Audi A5 convertible, worth around 50,000 Euros.
The hole in one prize on the 15th is an Audi R8 Spider, worth approximately 140,000 Euros.
Reid already drives an Audi Q5 and she said: “Audi is my favourite car. I absolutely love them so an R8 would be a little treat I think.”
Defending champion Jade Schaeffer from France, who earned her maiden title 12 months ago after a playoff with Paula Marti, is in a fine run of form but required treatment for an injured neck on Wednesday morning, which may affect her chances.
Germany’s Martina Eberl will be one to watch in the field despite being four months pregnant as this is her home course and she is a firm favourite with the galleries. Last year she tied for third place with Reid, one shot behind the winners who finished at 13-under. She hopes to secure her fourth LET title by finishing at least one stroke better.
“I’m feeling well and I would love to improve this year,” said Eberl, who is expecting her first child in November and due to be married in August. Unfortunately Marti has not entered the tournament as she is expecting her second child.
England’s Laura Davies is always one to watch and after finishing eighth last week on a course which did not suit her cavalier style of play, she is raring to get going on her first visit to the venue.
The last time she played in Germany was in 1992 when she won the European Ladies’ Open at Golf Club(discount golf clubs) Beuerberg and she said: “I have some very good memories.
“This course is excellent and I appreciate it being wider after Turkey. I think there will be lower scores as we can expect 15 or 16 under to win.”
